Dr. Tahsin Ali Kassam, founder of Alphabet Intellectual Property, is a UK Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, and Representative before the Unified Patent Court. Tahsin supports a broad range of clients, from start-ups to multinationals, navigating complex patent landscapes in fields including materials science and engineering, applied chemistry, mechanical engineering, medical devices, and sustainable technologies. His recent roles in private practice and industry, including at Ceres Power and Murgitroyd, have helped shape a pragmatic, commercially aware approach to protecting innovation. Prior to becoming a UK and European Chartered Patent Attorney, Tahsin earned a Distinction in the Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University of London in 2019.
Before transitioning into Intellectual Property, Tahsin earned Chartered Engineer status and was made a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining, further strengthening his technical engineering expertise. Tahsin served as a Materials Research Associate at TWI Ltd., where he focused on active metal brazing of advanced ceramics and also held roles as a Materials Development Engineer at Corewire Ltd., where he developed flux-cored arc welding consumables for the hardfacing repair of forging dies, and as a Materials Chemistry Researcher at University College London, working on a novel flow battery system. His engineering background further extends to his time at Micro Materials Ltd., where he supported nanomechanical testing systems.
Tahsin’s academic journey spans several leading institutions, including an MEng in Engineering with Business Finance from UCL, an MRes in Science & Engineering of Materials from the University of Birmingham, and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering conducted at TWI Cambridge and Brunel University London. This technical depth is reflected in his published research in areas such as high-strength ceramic interfaces and active metal brazing, including as a published author of the book A Review of the Alumina/Ag-Cu-Ti Active Metal Brazing Process published by Taylor & Francis in June 2018, as well as journal publications including in Nature Scientific Reports, as well as multiple engagements at international conferences.
Tahsin’s ability to engage inventors in highly technical discussions with fluency and clarity has earned him recognition across various platforms. He is passionate about making patents more accessible to UK start-ups, regularly contributing to The Patent Alphabetical, co-writing The Patent Eye, and having previously served as author of the Patent of the Month column for Materials World magazine for three years. His previous academic work has been recognized with multiple awards, notably the Prof Sir Richard Brook Prize for the best ceramics-based PhD thesis in the UK from Imperial College London. Now, at Alphabet Intellectual Property, Tahsin continues to combine legal expertise with engineering insight to ensure ideas are protected with precision: efficiently, affordably, and to a high standard of quality.
